About Us After thirty-one years as a health care professional it was time for a change, but nothing seemed as fulfilling as working with the elderly and infirm. So rather than change my career, I decided to approach it from a different perspective. Working in care facilities and as a home-care supervisor has allowed me the unique privilege of seeing first hand the challenges facing seniors and the disabled. What has impacted me most is the significant reduction of independence in many areas of daily living. My "hands-on" experience assisting people with various levels of paralysis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, dementia, and other illnesses affecting mobility inspired me to explore several ways to make dressing easier and less painful for my clients. This vision gave birth to Darlene's Silver Threads; a home-based business offering custom-made clothing for seniors and the disabled living in the suburbs surrounding beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. An exciting area offering a multitude of activities and events with wheelchair access mandatory! Many of my clients began to request lined capes that they could easily pull over themselves, thereby avoiding the inevitable struggle with jackets that never seemed to adequately protect them from our world famous rainy climate. The sensible thing to do was to get feedback from the people who would use the garments. After several lengthy discussions with members of the BC Paraplegic Association, Cerebral Palsy Association of BC, and residents and caregivers of several nursing homes, our wheelchair cape was designed and tested, with rave reviews. We are proud to be able to offer our capes to a much broader customer base and know the the high quality of the fabrics and the simple, yet functional design, will delight our clients for years to come.
